Endangered Gladiolus Species of Turkey
Öz: Gladiolus is a perennial geophyte, semi-rustice herb and belongs to the Iridaceae family. Gladiolusis an important bulbous ornamental plant. It is used as cut flowers, garden and potted plants. Turkey,which is among the major gene centers of the world and has a special place in plant genetic diversity,has rich genetic resources of geophytes including Gladiolus. However, many plant genetic resources,including Gladiolus are under genetic erosion because of the environmental and other problems andtherefore face with the danger of extinction. Turkey has one Gladiolus species in IUCN Red Listcategory. This species is Gladiolus italicus and its Red list category is Least Concern (LC). Gladiolusitalicus is distributed in Macaronesia, Mediterranean basin to central Asia. Also introduced andnaturalized in California. It naturally grows in many parts of Turkey. The other Gladiolus speciesthat are reported to be under threat in Turkey are; Gladiolus anatolicus, Gladiolus antakiensis,Gladiolus halophilus, Gladiolus humilis, Gladiolus micranthus. In addition to their potential usageas ornamental plants, their usage in phytomedicine due to the medical properties of the modifiedstems, leaves and in other related industries increases their importance. Therefore, it is veryimportant to protect these genetic resources of Gladiolus.

Öz: Iridaceae familyasından Gladiolus cinsine ait türler, çok yıllık otsu yapıda bitkilerdir. Kesme çiçek, saksılı bitki ve dış mekân süs bitkisi olarak değerlendirilen glayöller en önemli süs bitkilerinden bir tanesidir. Önemli gen merkezlerinin kesiştiği noktada yer alan Türkiye bitki genetik çeşitliliği bakımından özel bir konumdadır. Ayrıca Türkiye glayöller de dâhil olmak üzere geofitler açısından çok zengin genetik kaynaklara sahiptir. Ancak Gladiolus türlerinin de yer aldığı birçok bitki genetik kaynağı çevresel ve diğer problemler nedeniyle gen erozyonuna uğramakta ve yok olma tehlikesiyle karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Türkiye’de doğal olarak yetişen Gladiolus italicus IUCN kırmızı liste sınıfında yer almaktadır. Kırmızı listedeki sınıfı düşük riskli (LC) olan Gladiolus italicus türünün Makaronezya Bölgesi, Akdeniz Havzası ve Orta Asya’ya kadar geniş bir yayılım alanı vardır. Ayrıca Kaliforniya’da bulunan tür Türkiye’de de doğal olarak yetişmektedir. Kırmızı listede yer almamasına rağmen Türkiye’de nesli tehlike altında olduğu bildirilen diğer Gladiolus türleri; Gladiolus anatolicus, Gladiolus antakiensis, Gladiolus halophilus, Gladiolus humilis ve Gladiolus micranthus’dur. Gladiolus türlerinin süs bitkisi olarak kullanım potansiyellerinin yanında değişikliğe uğramış toprakaltı gövde ve yapraklarının tıpta ve ilgili diğer endüstrilerde kullanılması bunların önemini arttıran diğer özellikleridir. Bu nedenle Gladiolus genetik kaynaklarının korunması oldukça önemlidir.
