Effects of the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach (Bilişsel Egzersiz Terapi Yaklaşımı) on fatigue and balance in people with multiple sclerosis

Öz:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach (Bilişsel Egzersiz Terapi Yaklaşımı (BETY)) on fatigue and balance in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Methods: A total of 31 individuals (n study group =16, n control group =15) were randomly assigned to two groups, study and control group, followed up for eight weeks. BETY was applied to the study group; home program was given to the control group. Individuals were evaluated two times before treatment and at the end of 24 sessions that lasted eight weeks. For balance evaluation; Berg Balance Scale, Tandem Stance Time, Timed Up and Go Test, Functional Reach Test, for fatigue evaluation; Fatigue Severity Scale, Fatigue Impact Scale were used. Results: A statistically significant improvement was observed in all the values of the study group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Fatigue and balance are important for patients with MS. Exercise approaches for these two parameters are recommended. This study showed that BETY is an effective method on fatigue and balance in individuals with MS.
