The Perception of Trust in Organizational Contexts

Öz:
Trust is a psychological variable that interests sociologists, economists as well as psychologists. The concept has been examined from various viewpoints: A personality disposition, an institutional variable, a social psychological variable formed as a result of social interactions between individuals and the characteristics of the trusted person in the interaction. When measuring the perception of trust, it is important to differentiate among its referents. In work environments, trust referents mainly include managers/supervisors, work colleagues/co-workers, subordinates, and the organization. Among these, the most frequently examined ones have been managers/supervisors and the organization. Although there is some empirical research on the antecedents of trust perception and its outcomes in work environments, more data of a longitudinal nature are needed on the process of trust development.
