Geriatric Patients and Restorative Dentistry

Öz:
Various factors including technological advances, improvedquality of life, ease of access to health services have prolongedhuman life. The increase in the elderly population brings theneed for new arrangements in all aspects of life for this group.Oral and dental diseases prove an issue that affects all ages.Geriatric dentistry has emerged to address these problems andfocus on promoting oral dental health and care for elderly bytaking care of the protection of oral health, which is necessaryfor their physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being.Treatment of dental tissues that survived despite ageing iscrucial in restorative dentistry. Dental caries, discolorations, tooth abrasions caused by function or habits are commonproblems. Restorative approaches for geriatric patients shouldinclude evidence-based treatment options, preserve existingdental tissue, do not make the patient feel tired duringtreatment, and if necessary, include collaboration with medicalpractitioners. Physiological and pathological changes thatoccur in elderly people over time lead to the perception thatcomplex treatments will be necessary, and so, dentists anddentistry students refrain from treating this group. Theexpansion of the elderly population reveals the lack of basictreatment procedures in restorative dentistry for geriatricpatients as well as scarcity of physicians who feel competent inthis field, thus indicating the need to address this issue morecarefully, especially during the dentistry education. In order toprovide better treatments to the growing elderly population inTurkey, it is necessary to focus more on the significance oftherapeutic approaches to geriatric patients in dentistrycurriculum.
