"Why We're Exposed to Violence?" A Qualitative Research For The Reasons According ToPhysicians

Öz:
As a social problem, acts of violence against healthcare workers from past to present take placefrequently in written and visual media, and the increasing number of cases draw attention. In the literature, violence against health care workers is examined from various disciplines and perspectives. This study aimsto determine the viewpoints of physicians on the violence in health as one of the most critical victims ofviolence. For this purpose, face to face interviews were conducted with physicians in-depth who wereselected from Kocaeli/Turkey by random sampling method and exposed to violence before with ethicalapproval from Ethical Committe of University of Sakarya (Issue Date and Number: 15/06/2015-7547).Decoded interviews were subjected to content analysis through the Qualitative Data Analysis software. In thecoding study conducted, physicians' causes of physical and verbal violence were analyzed, and solutionproposals were examined. In the tests conducted, according to the physicians, the most important causes ofphysical and verbal violence they were exposed to were determined as social structure, Lack of education, and Lack of communication. Accordingly, while the concepts of disrespect, intolerance/indifference,impatience, and unconsciousness were detailed with reference to the social structure, the concept ofeducation was expressed in short and clear sentences by all physicians. At the point of preventing violence, the suggestions of physicians coming to the fore are about taking satisfactory precautionary measures, changing the managers of health institutions, recruiting assistants, and improving working conditions. Whileshort and clear sentences were used about increasing the level of education and making criminal sanctionsdeterrent, no suggestions were made regarding the development of communication by using generalformulaic expressions related to the development of social awareness
