Substance, cigarette and alcohol use among high school students in the provincial center of Samsun, Turkey

Öz:

Objective: This study was designed to determine the levels ofcigarette, alcohol and substance use among high school students in the Samsun provincial centre.Material and Method: The study population consisted of26,707 students attending 40 high schools. Contact was established with 951 students, 92.7% of the study sample. “Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance” survey questions were used informulating the questionnaire.Results: Nine hundred and fifty-one students, 468 female(49.21%) and 483 male (50.79%), participated. Non-smokingamong females (75.21%) was significantly higher than amongmales (64.39%). As students progressed through school, levelsof smoking at least one cigarette and of smoking every day in theprevious month increased significantly. Levels of using alcoholat least once and of drinking and intoxication in the precedingmonth were higher among male students. Levels of intoxication rose significantly with progress through school. The number of students stating that they had used any substance during their lives was 3.15%, and was significantly higher amongmales (4.55%) compared to females (1.70%).Conclusion: Smoking and alcohol and substance use are more common among males. This must be considered in deterrent campaigns targeting this age group.

Samsun İl Merkezindeki lise öğrencilerinde sigara, alkol ve madde kullanımı

Öz:

Amaç: Samsun il merkezindeki liselerde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin sigara, alkol ve madde kullanım durumlarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: Samsun İl Merkezinde örgün eğitim veren,40 liseye devam eden 26707 öğrenci araştırmanın evreninioluşturdu. Araştırma örnekleminin 951’ine (%92,7) ulaşıldı.Anket formunun oluşturulmasında “Youth Risk Behavior Surve- illance” anketi sorularından yararlanıldı.Bulgular: Çalışmaya 468’i (%49,21) kız, 483’ü (%50,79) erkek toplam 951 öğrenci katıldı. Kız öğrencilerde sigara içmeme oranı (%75,21), erkek öğrencilere (%64,39) göre istatistikselolarak anlamlı yüksek idi. Öğrencilerin sınıfları ilerledikçe yaşamı boyunca en az bir tane sigara içme ve son bir ayda her gün sigara içme oranlarının istatistiksel olarak anlamlı biçimde arttığı görüldü. Erkek öğrencilerde yaşamı boyunca en az birkez alkollü içki içme, son bir ayda alkollü içki içme ve sarhoş olma oranları kız öğrencilere göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı yüksek bulundu. Öğrencilerin sınıfları ilerledikçe yaşamı boyunca sarhoş olma oranları istatistiksel olarak anlamlı biçimde artıyordu. Yaşamı boyunca herhangi bir madde kullandığınıbelirten öğrencilerin oranı %3,15 olup; bu oran erkek öğrencilerde (%4,55) kız öğrencilere (%1,70) göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı yüksek idi. Sonuç: Erkeklerde sigara içme, alkol ve madde kullanma sıklığı daha yüksek orandadır. Bu yaş grubuna yönelik olarak yapılacak karşıt kampanyalarda bu durum göz önünde bulundurulmalıdır.
