Summary Factors Affecting Father Involvement and Benefits of Father Involement for Father, Mother, and Child

Öz:
Fathers are just as essential in children’s life as mothers. The impact of fathers has long been ignored, and the researches were mostly conducted with mothers rather than fathers. However, changes in the gender roles in many countries around the world paved the way to changes in the roles of fatherhood, and evolved to co-parenting. These changes became visible both in scientific publications, and many countries’ policies on this issue. Studies revealed that father involvement makes positive contribution not only on child development, but also on fathers’ lives and marital relations. Fathers who are actively involved in child care have more parental satisfaction and more positive relations with their spouses. Children who spend more time with their fathers become advantageous in terms of socio-emotional, cognitive and physical development. Father involvement, which has critical implications on child development, is affected by many factors related to the father, the mother or the child. For example, father demographics, personality, social or cultural status; and mother’s employment status and her attitudes that support or hinder father’s involvement, the quality of his relation with his father; the child’s gender, age and temperament might all have facilitative or interceptive roles on father’s involvement. Even though the number of studies in the literature about father’s role and involvement has considerably increased in the last twenty years, the studies conducted in Turkey still seem to be insufficient. Although fathers seem to benefit from intervention studies aiming at improving father involvement, these interventions will be more beneficial if these studies are conducted in the early periods, such as prenatal or infancy
