Anahtar Kelime: The Relationship between Tourism and Economic Growth in Turkey: A Sectoral Analysis with Bootstrap ARDL Approach and Asymmetric Causality Test
Öz: Today, tourism is one of the most important export sources of countries. The tourism sector can provide various benefits such as providing external financing to economies, increasing the efficiency of firms and creating new employment areas. Therefore, examining the relationship between tourism sector and economic growth is seen as an important aim for both researchers and policy makers. This study investigates the long-run relationships between tourism revenues, the number of tourist arrivals and agriculture, industry and service sectors in Turkey covering the period of 1963-2017. For this purpose, the study utilized bootstrap ARDL approach, Hacker-Hatemi-J symmetric and Hatemi-J asymmetric causality tests. The bootstrap ARDL approach results does not confirm the existence of the cointegration relationship between the variables. According to the symmetric causality test results, only a unidirectional causality has been determined from tourism revenues to service sector. However, the asymmetric causality test results indicate that the flow of causality runs from tourism revenues to service sector, and there is a bidirectional causal relationship between tourist arrivals and agriculture sector. Consequently, these results confirm the validity of the tourism led growth hypothesis for Turkey in the service and agricultural sectors.
