Unmet Care Needs in Advanced Stage Cancer Patients

Öz:
While earlier diagnoses and newly developed treatment methods contributeto the increased survival rates of cancer patients, not all patients canbe treated curatively. Patients who cannot be treated curatively are definedas those who have advanced stage, recurrent, metastatic and incurablecancers. It has been observed that advanced stage cancer patients havemedium to high levels of unmet needs and have many problems in the currenthealth care system. These include insufficient informational needs aswell as unmet physical, psychological, sexual, social, financial and spiritualaspects of care. Unmet needs are associated with decreases in quality of lifeand patient satisfaction. Research has shown that palliative care servicesare on the verge of growing rapidly in Turkey. The current review aims toidentify health care needs and the proportion of these that are unmet inadult cancer patients with advanced stage, recurrent or metastasized cancer. This review may serve as a guide for the care of such patients.
