Becoming Miracle of Breast Milk is Continuing
Öz: Breast milk is a miraculous nutrient used in feeding the newborn from past to present. The nutritional content of each mother's breast milk is special and unique to her baby. Although breastfeeding rates are high in our country and in the world, exclusive breastfeeding rate in the first six months is low. It is known that babies fed with breast milk are protected against Type 2 diabetes, have low weight gain during childhood and obesity is prevented. Besides, it has been notified that breast milk is used for nonpharmacological pain relief for infants, visual and cognitive functions and psychomotor development process of infants are improved and intestinal microbiota formation is supported. It is stated that breastfeeding increases the release of oxytocin with close contact between mother and infant, resulting calmness and antistress effects on the mother, thus reducing the possibility of postpartum depression. In the results of a systematic meta-analysis, it has been reported that breast and over cancer risk decreased in women breastfeeding for more than one year. It is stated that women who feed babies only with breast milk have faster uterine involution and lose more weight in the postpartum period. Nurses and midwifes play a key role for mothers to support exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months. The education and counseling support provided by health professionals in the prenatal and early postnatal period increases the time to start early breastfeeding, the duration and rate of breastfeeding. In this review, the miraculous effects of the breast milk will be examined and the role of the nurse in breastfeeding will be discussed.
