Exploring the Disciplined Mind in Middle School Science Course
Öz: The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent middle school students exhibit the disciplined mind traits at science courses and gaining insights about the quality and the quantity of the classroom practices related to the disciplined mind. To this end, the study employed the disciplined mind scale (α=0,89) and the rubric for disciplined mind performance tasks (G=0,85), the teaching and learning environment assessment scale (α=0,93), and classroom observation notes. This study was carried out with 31 sixth-graders and 30 eighth-graders in a school located in the central districts of Ankara of Turkey. Results indicated that there was not any significant difference between sixth and eighth-graders in terms of exhibiting the disciplined mind traits and science courses they took in terms of cultivating a disciplined mind. Additionally, the qualitative data revealed that students’ disciplined mind traits they showed were inadequate, and the classroom practices to promote the students’ disciplined mind development were insufficient. This study will contribute to future research in terms of deep understanding of the disciplined mind theory and its practice.

Öz: Bu araştırmada fen bilimleri dersinde ortaokul öğrencilerinin disiplinli zihin alanı özelliklerini ne düzeyde gösterdiklerini ortaya çıkarmak ve disiplinli zihne ilişkin sınıf içi uygulamaların niteliği ve niceliği hakkında derinlemesine bilgiye ulaşmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaca ulaşmak üzere, disiplinli zihin ölçeği(α=0,89), disiplinli zihin performans görevi puanlama anahtarı (G=0,85), öğretme-öğrenme süreci değerlendirme ölçeği (α=0,93) ve sınıf gözlem notları kullanılmıştır. Araştırma Türkiye’nin Ankara ili merkez ilçesinde yer alan bir okulda 31 altıncı sınıf ve 30 sekizinci sınıf öğrencisi ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre, altıncı ve sekizinci sınıf öğrencileri arasında disiplinli zihni gösterme bakımından ve bu sınıflardaki öğrencilerin aldıkları fen eğitimleri arasında ise disiplinli zihni geliştirme bakımından anlamlı bir fark olmadığı sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. Aynı zamanda araştırmanın nitel verileri, öğrencilerin disiplinli zihin özelliklerini yeterli düzeyde göstermedikleri ve öğretme-öğrenme ortamlarının disiplinli zihni geliştirme açısından yetersiz olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştıma sonuçlarının disiplinli zihin teorisi ve uygulamalarını derinlemesine anlamak açısından daha sonra yapılacak araştırmalara ışık tutacağı düşünülmektedir.
