Implicit Processes in Close Relationships: Implicit Partner Attitudes and Relationship Outcomes

The Development of Online Disinhibition Scale: Reliability and Validity Study

Öz:
The present study aims to develop an instrument to measure the online disinhibition which is associated with individuals feeling and behaving differently in online and face-to-face contexts. Based on the Social Identity Model of Deindividuation (SIDE) Model, a draft scale with 15 items was prepared. A pilot study was conducted with 130 university students (88 female, 42 male) and the main study included 517 university students (266 female, 250 male, 1 non-specified). According to the results of exploratory factor analysis with pilot data, the two-factor model appeared, which are named “reduced responsibility of negative behavior” and “facilitated communication.” Results of confirmatory factor analysis with 517 participants showed that the two-factor model had shown a good model fit. Internal consistency measures of the factors are .83 and .80, deemed acceptable. Further validity findings such as the relationship with personality characteristics, communication skills, and gender are provided and discussed as well. Overall, findings support that the Online Disinhibition Scale shows sufficient psychometric evidence
